The Sgro Family, Missionaries to Guatemala

About our family
Imagine having thirteen children. They’re not adopted or from previous marriages; they’re all yours!  Then imagine the oldest is eighteen years. old, and the youngest is nine months. Now imagine the father is forty-eight yrs. old, and the mother is forty-three. You have two dogs, a cat, fish, a car payment, a home, a successful business, and you live in a typical “anywhere in the USA” 1 and 1/2 story raised ranch subdivision. You shop at Lowes, Best Buy, and Home Depot.  You watch TV, go to church, take vacations at the beach, take your children to the movies and to their friends house...you basically live a typical American life (except, of course, the part with 13 children which is not typical anywhere). You went on a couple of week-long short term mission trips to Guatemala, and for a while, you dreamed of being a missionary; you even prayed to the Lord if it was His will, you would move wherever, whenever He said....but that was a while ago.

Those dreams came, and went. You thought those dreams died, but they didn’t.
One day, Thursday, 16 July 2009 at 8:20 A.M. (to be exact), the Lord called you and your spouse (separately, yet on the same day) to move to Guatemala as missionaries.    Now imagine your life as if it were a snow globe, and imagine that the Lord had just picked it up, shook it and placed it back down. Then you look at your spouse as you both realized you had just been called into full-time ministry.

At 48 and 43 yrs. old you were going to sell everything and, with your thirteen children,  move to a third-world country where you knew no one; didn’t speak their language; didn’t know their customs; had no idea of their culture; and in fact, one of you had never been there and the other had only been there for a total of 21 days.

This is exactly what happened to David and Angela Sgro and their 13 children! This book tells their story of how they went from a family that owned a karate school and lived in the suburbs of Fayetteville, NC to selling everything and moving to Guatemala City (Mixco), which is the ninth most dangerous city in the world.  Bagdad, Iraq was listed at number eight.
