DID you know Guatemala has the 4th highest CHRONIC MALNUTRITION RATE in the world? Look at the photo of me with the widows and abandoned womens group I formed. I'm only 5' 8" and yet I stand head and shoulders above the Mayans. Why? Many generations of chronic malnutrition. I've been working here for 10 years, starting feeding programs at schools, bringing in doctors, etc. AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED! And so, in frustration for a while I've been crying out to the Lord earlier this year, saying "Lord, I don't want to die and feel like my life's work here has amounted to nothing . I want to see Your Power and Glory change this place..." AND THEN the Holy Spirit brought me to several verses. First: 1 John 3:17 "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?" And so I responded to the Lord: "Yes Lord, I've been feeding your sheep!" And the Lord said "BUT David, if I feed you today (Give a man a fish), you will be hungry tomorrow. My word also says "If a man will not work, neither should he eat." If you really want to change lives here, get them working! (Teach them to fish)" James 1:27 "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." My father died when I was 10, leaving my mother with 4 children, 10 and younger, so I know the hardships this can bring, and I really have a heart for this group. So if I REALLY want to help this group GET OUT OF THEIR DISTRESS, then I need to get them gainfully employed! These women are employed, but when a Mayan woman loses her husband, or he leaves her and no longer provides for her, then she takes what ever work she can find; and it's usually cleaning houses and washing clothes, by hand, for $.75 - $4 a day, AND yet she has children to take care of! And so a new chapter in GO! Ministries started. FIRST: I just funded a micro-business called "COCODE Jewelry" with the widows and abandonded women. When my father died, my mother used a portion of her life insurance policy to fund a restaurant with her brother. And so I started worked in the restaurant business through high school and college, up until I started teaching karate full time. So, SECONDLY, I had a meeting with a friend who owns a little restaurant, and will be working with her to on Thursday night to set up some interviews for employment. IF this goes as planned, future plans for 2022 including funding a Filipino Restaurant micro-business with my friend, employing more widows and abandoned women. (My wife knows a thing or two about cooking simple Filipino dishes that will be LOVED here, and the local food is very similiar, different enough that people will love it!). Our goal is to teach these women to read, write, and learn basic business accounting and small restaurant management. ALL of these woman have either had NO SCHOOLING WHATSOEVER, or, at best, finished the 3rd grade. So working in a restaurant will be a game changer! THIRD (And lastly) Xenacoj (the town where I live part time) is known for its sewing shops. There are many small home-based sewing shops here (5 - 10 sewing machines). In a meeting yesterday I was able to secure some employment for some of my widows and abandoned women. My plan is to first get the women employed, and then let "the cream of the crop rise to the top!" In other words, I plan on helping the women start businesses of their very own!
