What is the CMMA?
(Christian Martial Missions Association)
By David Sgro

The CMMA is an Association of Christian Martial Artist.  The ultimate purpose of the CMMA is to utilize our God-given martial art talents to fulfill the Great Commission, and "Make Disciples' for Christ!  To that end, the CMMA seeks to uplift and support our Instructors, Schools, students and the families though prayer, fellowship, technical expertise, tournaments, mentorships, rank promotion (If needed), Short Term Mission Trips), and Long Term Mission trips.

In 1979 I (David Sgro) joined the CBBA (Christian Black Belt Association).  The CBBA founded in 1970 by Dr. Riedner.  He went home to the Lord in 2021.  For more information on the CBBA visit
www.christianblackbeltassoc.org.  Dr Riedner introduced me to the concept of using martial arts as a platform for mission work. I went on my first Short Term Martial Arts-Mission Trip to Guatemala in 2004.  This continued until the Lord called me to full-time ministry in 2009.  I did not speak Spanish.  This did not stop my, as my family and I relocated to Guatemala in 2010, and lived there until 2013.    My family and I returned to the US and has continued to maintain a home and ministry base in Guatemala making 3 - 4 regular mission trips yearly. In addition In 2016 I expanded GO! Ministries to the Philippines.   In June 2022, Melanie (my wife) and I bought property in the Philippines to build a Mission Training School where I, and others...Maybe you?!? will train Disciples in Missions and Martial Arts.  This will allow Filipinos to open martial art schools in the Philippines as a source of income to continue in their mission work.  One of the goals of the CMMA is to train Christian Martial Artist how to share their faith through the martial arts.

What does the
CMMA logo mean?

Picture

The CMMA Logo is a blend of two Christograms; Chi Rho and the Fish.  A Christogram is a monogram or combination of letters that forms an abbreviation for the name of Jesus Christ, traditionally used as a religious symbol within the Christian Church. Chi Rho is one of the oldest Christograms (☧). It consists of the superimposed Greek letters chi (Χ) and rho (Ρ), which are the first two letters of Greek χριστός "Christ". It was displayed on the labarume military standard used by Constantine the Great in AD 312.  "Chi Rho" symbolizes the "Martial" (Military) portion of the CMMA. The ichthys or ichthus (/ˈɪkθəs/), from the Greek ikhthū́s (ἰχθύς, 1st cent. AD Koine Greek pronunciation: [ixˈθys], "fish") is a symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs, the ends of the right side extending beyond the meeting point so as to resemble the profile of a fish. The symbol was adopted by early Christians  as a secret symbol; a shibboleth to determine if another was indeed Christian. It is now known colloquially as the "sign of the fish" or the "Jesus fish”.  The “Jesus fish’ represents the “Mission” aspect of the CMMA.  Together, the Chi Rho and the Ichthus form the logo for the CMMA (Christian Martial Arts Missions Association).  “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.” Matthew 11:12, and “Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19.  And finally “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations”.  Matthew 28:19.  Therefore, the CMMA wants to train disciples to be violent in their pursuit of Christ to become fishers of men,  sending them to “GO! And make disciples of ALL Nations!”
